The reason for this is the amount of room air it takes to feed a fire. You need a thrust of air to assist in the natural venting of the fireplace, natural venting begins as soon as you open the damper.

Now that homes are built so air tight, when you are running your furnace your home appliances require exhaust and the exhausted air needs to come from somewhere. At times it may come back down the chimney causing smoke back up or a negative air problem.

It also could be your furnace backing up and may cause a carbon monoxide issue. Fire and exhaust systems will get the air they need from the easiest source.
